What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal could be the ideal solution if you want to permanently reduce areas of body hair.

Whether it be bikini and underarm, jawline and chin, or back and chest; most of your body can be treated, so you can enjoy silky-smooth skin without the continued hassle of shaving and waxing. We offer two types of hair removal treatment at The Hospital Group: Intense Pulsed Light technology (IPL) and laser.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal?

The hairs on the area being treated will become increasingly sparse throughout the course of treatment – leaving you with hair-free, smooth skin. Permanent results are often achieved by this amazing treatment.

You will visit the clinic every 4-8 weeks for a minimum of 8 sessions, depending on which area of the body you are having treated. You could be swimsuit-ready whenever the sun shines, as you will enjoy a permanent 60-70% decrease in hair growth by the end of your course.

Are there any risks?

It is important to weigh up the risks involved against the benefits that the treatment can bring – just as with all types of medical aesthetic treatment.

Your medical aesthetic practitioner will talk you through any risks and complications, although possible side effects are usually minimal. They include swelling and redness following the procedure

Is it right for me?

You may experience an itchy rash, or that the skin feels dry and bumpy after shaving the unwanted hairs on your body. You could be looking for a solution that will help you banish the hairs for good. as waxing regularly may have become too painful and can be costly long-term.

You can find out whether you are a suitable candidate for laser hair removal with advice from our medical aesthetic practitioners. We do not usually recommend this treatment for anyone with blonde, grey or red hair – you tend to get the best results if you have dark hair.

As you will need to let your natural tan fade before having the treatment, having laser hair removal in the winter is more beneficial than in the summer. By starting in the winter months, you will be beach ready by the time summer arrives.

Laser hair removal FAQ's
When you’re deciding whether to have treatment, it’s reassuring to have all the facts. You’ll be able to ask any questions at your consultation, but here are some that our customers most frequently ask.
How does laser compare with other hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods of hair removal, which must be repeated on a frequently. Laser hair removal offers a more permanent method hair reduction. It is also much faster than electrolysis, as the laser can cover a large area and works in far fewer treatments. All skin types will require a patch test to assess suitability. It can be difficult to treat light, red or grey hair, and tanned skin (including fake tan) cannot be treated.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
When the pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. However, this is generally quite minimal. A patch test will enable you to feel what the treatment will be like before undertaking a course.
How many treatments will I need?
Most areas require 3-6 treatments. However, the number of treatments required does vary depending on factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Not all hairs grow actively at the same time. Laser hair removal treatments work by disabling the hair that is in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear slightly red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment, you may experience what appears to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not re-growing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave if necessary.
What are the possible side effects?
Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. You will have a patch test prior to any treatment.

Next steps

Your journey step by step

Treatment consultation

Your journey with The Hospital Group begins with a consultation with our friendly medical aesthetic practitioners, this may be an Aesthetician, Nurse Practitioner or Doctor. During this conversation you can talk through why you’re interested in this treatment, how much it costs, if there are finance options available to you, whether you’re suitable for treatment, if you’ll need a one off treatment, or a full course, as well as potential treatment dates.

You can ask our medical aesthetic practitioners any questions as they are extremely knowledgeable and have undertaken extensive training. If you feel ready to proceed, we can carry out a laser patch test (where applicable) and book your first treatment for a date and time that suits you.

The treatment

You can ask your medical aesthetic practitioner any final questions on the day of the treatment. All pre- and post-treatment advice will be discussed prior to the day itself, so you will know exactly what to expect during your treatment, including how long it will take, and how it will feel.

Recovery

For most medical aesthetic treatments, you will be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed, and you should be able to go about your normal day-to-day activities. If you experience any mild discomfort, redness or swelling, this will subside within the following days. Any specific aftercare requirements will be discussed at your consultation.

Aftercare

We are here to support you throughout your medical aesthetics journey, we believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact us at any time.
