What is scar revision?

Scar revision or reduction surgery aims to minimise a scar so it’s less visible and blends in more with the rest of your skin.

You may have an unsightly scar or a build-up of scar tissue on the skin, which can be distressing and lead to low self-confidence. Scar revision can help make a real improvement to the appearance of your skin.

What are the benefits of scar revision?

Scar revision surgery could make you much happier about your appearance, particularly if the scar is in a prominent place like the face, neck or chest.

It isn’t possible to completely eliminate a scar, but through careful planning and the specialist techniques used during the procedure, our doctors can blend the scar into the rest of the skin to make it less noticeable.

Are there any risks?

It is important to weigh up the risks involved against the benefits that the treatment can bring – just as with all types of medical aesthetic treatment.

Your medical aesthetic practitioner will talk you through any risks and complications, although possible side effects are usually minimal. They include bleeding, infection, redness, as well as change in pigmentation and skin sensitivity.

Is it right for me?

Scar revision treatment can be performed on most people who feel that they’d like their scars reduced. It’s important to be realistic about the results of the surgery, and understand that these will be different for every person.

Scar revision FAQs

More FAQs
How much will the procedure cost?

The cost of your scar revision procedure will vary depending on the size of the scar. Our medical aesthetics practitioner will talk you through the likely costs involved.

How does surgical scar revision work?
Surgical scar reduction is carried out by making incisions on either side of the scar to remodel the surrounding skin. Depending on the location of the scar, it can be made into a skin fold so that it’s less noticeable. While there will still be some visible scarring, it should look much neater and less obvious.
What are my non-surgical scar revision options?
Non-surgical scar revision/reduction options include cool laser, TCA peels, microneedling, fillers and steroid injections. A combination of these are sometimes used, and you can learn more about them in your discussion with your medical aesthetics practitioner.
Are the results permanent?
The results of scar reduction are permanent, but you will have scarring from the revision. The goal is to create a neater and tidier scar that’s less conspicuous than it previously was.
Does scar revision hurt?
You won’t be able to feel anything throughout a surgical scar revision procedure as it’s carried out under local anaesthetic, but you will feel some pain and have some swelling for a couple of weeks afterwards while the wound heals. Non-surgical treatments will also be pain free. Because different types of anaesthetics will be used depending upon which is the best option for you, your medical anaesthetic practitioner will discuss this at your initial consultation.

We're ready when you are

Treatment consultation

Your journey with The Hospital Group begins with a consultation with our friendly medical aesthetic practitioners, this may be an Aesthetician, Nurse Practitioner or Doctor. During this conversation you can talk through why you’re interested in this treatment, how much it costs, whether you’re suitable for treatment, if you’ll need a one off treatment, or a full course, as well as potential treatment dates.

You can ask our medical aesthetic practitioners any questions as they are extremely knowledgeable and have undertaken extensive training. If you feel ready to proceed, we can carry out a laser patch test (where applicable) and book your first treatment for a date and time that suits you.

The treatment

You can ask your medical aesthetic practitioner any final questions on the day of the treatment. All pre- and post-treatment advice will be discussed prior to the day itself, so you will know exactly what to expect during your treatment, including how long it will take, and how it will feel.

For most medical aesthetic treatments, you will be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed, and you should be able to go about your normal day-to-day activities. If you experience any mild discomfort, redness or swelling, this will subside within the following days. Any specific aftercare requirements will be discussed at your consultation.

We are here to support you throughout your medical aesthetics journey, we believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact us at any time.
