Has previous weight loss surgery not helped you achieve the results you had been hoping for?
Conversion surgery could be suitable for you if you have experienced problems with your gastric band, such as slippage, or difficulty maintaining weight loss after surgery. It is also suitable for people who haven’t lost as much weight as they’d hoped to from other types of weight loss surgery.
Whatever your situation, gastric band to gastric sleeve conversion surgery could be an effective way to bring your weight loss goals back within reach.
If your gastric band hasn’t helped you maintain your weight loss like you had hoped, conversion from a gastric band to a gastric sleeve could be an effective alternative.
A gastric band to gastric sleeve conversion helps to reduce appetite, meaning you will feel fuller sooner and eat less as a result. It is a non-reversible procedure that reduces the size and capacity of the stomach by about 75%, also removing the part of the stomach that stimulates the appetite hormone, ghrelin.
All surgical procedures pose a potential risk, and it is important know what these are before you go ahead so that you can weigh them up against the benefits your procedure could bring. During your consultations you will talk through these potential complications and you can ask any questions that you have about them.
As a guide, these may include bleeding, infection, nausea, vomiting and constipation.

If you would like to proceed, we will book your free weight loss consultation.
Your free consultation
Weight loss surgery involves two specialist consultations. Your first one will be with a weight loss practitioner (either a nurse or dietitian) and can be carried out in your local clinic or over video chat. During this conversation you will talk about your goals for surgery and go through your medical history to ascertain whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure. You will also discuss the results you might expect, as well as the possible risks and complications of surgery. Our specialists extremely knowledgeable as they are given extensive training, so they can answer any questions you might have.
If you feel you would like to go ahead, they will then book you for a consultation with the surgeon. Your expert surgeon will go through all the risks and benefits, as well as confirming whether or not you are suitable for surgery. You will then be referred to a clinic nurse for pre-operative assessments and tests.
You will meet your surgeon on the day of your surgery so that you can talk through any final questions you might have and read through the consent form. The whole surgical team will be introduced to you before heading into theatre for the procedure.
The specifics of surgery will be discussed prior to the day – you will find out how long it will take, the types of anaesthetics used, and they will talk you through the procedure itself.
Following weight loss surgery, you will need to stay in hospital for the initial stages of your recovery. You will likely feel swollen and in some pain following the procedure. Our friendly nursing team will be on hand to look after you and provide any painkillers you might need.
Immediately after surgery, you will be given intravenous drip hydration so that your fluid levels are maintained. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic, so you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home when you are discharged. We recommend that you have someone with you until the effects of the anaesthetic wear off.
We will talk you through taking care of yourself at home before you leave hospital. There is also a 24/7 helpline available to you where you can call a member of the clinical team at any time for support.
The surgery itself is only the beginning, and we believe in the highest standard of aftercare following your procedure. Your body needs time to heal, and you will need to stay off work until you feel ready to return. You should also avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for around six weeks. Recovery periods can be discussed with your surgeon before the procedure.
There are a number of different aftercare packages available to help aid you in your weight loss journey and these will be discussed during your consultation process. You can read more about these on our aftercare page.
