5 things you didn’t know about breast surgery

Breast enlargement, or a ‘boob job’, add volume to the breasts, making them larger and rounder by inserting breast implants.

If you’re unhappy that your breasts are flat, asymmetrical or lacking volume due to pregnancy, weight loss or ageing, a ‘boob job’ could help create a fuller, curvier shape.

Not sure where to start with finding out more about breast surgery? We’ve picked 5 things you might not know about breast surgery and explained them below:

1. They can look totally natural

Here at The Hospital Group, we offer both traditional round implants as well as natural-looking teardrop-shaped implants that can be placed ‘above’ or ‘under the muscle’ depending on the look you want. Teardrop implants are becoming more and more popular as they closely follow the silhouette of a natural breast and can look very natural and often completely undetectable.

2. Recovery isn’t as long as you think

Breast surgery is a major operation, so you’ll need to take time to recover and care for your body. But it’s good to know that recovery time is surprisingly short nowadays. Thanks to advanced surgery techniques, smaller incisions can be used, meaning fewer stitches and a much faster recovery time. From having the surgery to being back on your feet and comfortably back at work takes anywhere from seven days, although most women find around two weeks is ideal. A perfect break to have off and come back to work feeling like a new woman.

3. Helpful hints to speed up recovery

A full recovery should be made within six to eight weeks but be careful to avoid working out intensely and activities which can jolt your breasts, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. You’ll be able to do light workouts after the first two weeks and ease back into your normal routine around the six-week mark.

After surgery, you will usually need to wear your post-surgical compression bra at all times in the days and weeks after your procedure, to help your body settle and support the effective healing of your new implants.

Sticking to a healthy diet rich in nutrients will help your body get the right nourishment to heal effectively. Look for fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins such as pork, chicken, tofu and beans, and fish for omega three, the essential fatty acid which aids in nutrient absorption. Whole grains are great to add too.

4. It’s popular the world over

Cosmetic surgery comes in all forms, but one thing that doesn’t change across the world is the popularity of breast surgery. Globally, breast augmentations are one of the most performed cosmetic procedures, with rhinoplasty, tummy tucks and liposuction all regularly ranked as among the most popular surgeries performed alongside breast surgery.

While it can be tempting to go abroad for a cheaper procedure, it’s important to remember that the quality of cosmetic surgery and the care you receive isn’t something that should be compromised in favour of a cheaper cost.

5. You can most likely breastfeed with implants

Most women can breastfeed with implants as the most common incision for a breast enlargement is the fold underneath the breast. If the breast implants are placed under the pectoral muscle and away from any milk ducts, they usually stay intact and connected to the nipple without any issues.

Every care is always taken during surgery to ensure that milk production and milk ducts remain unaffected, particularly if the incisions are made underneath the breast or in the armpits, away from these areas.

It is worth bearing in mind that we cannot guarantee that you will 100% be able to breastfeed with implants and as with every surgical procedure, it does carry a number of risks which will, of course, always be explained to you in detail so you can make an informed decision that’s right for you and your future plans.
