Debunked: 10 boob job myths

Scarring, sensitivity and safety; all your misconceptions about breast surgery clarified with The Hospital Group.

A confident you comes from the inside and out. It’s the feeling of being who you want to be and looking how you want to look. If there are changes you’d like to make, we’re here to help you achieve the body you want to have.

If you’re unhappy that your breasts are flat, asymmetrical or lacking volume due to pregnancy, weight loss or ageing, then you may have thought about a breast augmentation to help create a fuller, curvier shape. Despite being one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures, there are still so many common misconceptions around having a boob job – let us dispel the untruths and debunk 10 myths about breast surgery:

Myth 1: ‘You can’t go from small to large in one procedure.’

It is important to be realistic about the results you are hoping to achieve from breast enlargement surgery. It is likely that you will initially go up a few cup sizes especially if you have very little breast tissue, as the body and skin need time to adjust to such large changes. Our surgeons have a duty of care and will only recommend breast surgery if it is right for you – in your consultation they will be able to give you an indication on the best implant size for you and the results you can expect.

Myth 2: ‘All breast implants look fake.’

At The Hospital Group, we offer both classic, round implants and more natural looking teardrop shaped implants that can be placed ‘above’ or ‘under the muscle’ depending on the look you which to achieve. ‘Over’ or ‘above the muscle’ procedures involve placing the breast implant in front of your breast muscle, which means it’s more superficial and sits just below the breast tissue. This might be the best option for you if you have some breast tissue already or if you’re restoring fullness to deflated breasts. ‘Under’ or ‘behind the muscle’ refers to an implant that sits behind the breast muscle. This is suitable for women with very small breasts who have very little breast tissue. This method reduces the likelihood of your breast implants showing and gives a more natural looking result but it’s more difficult to place larger implants this way. Your surgeon will discuss with you the results you want to achieve from breast surgery and will advise the best implant placement for your body.

Myth 3: ‘Breast surgery is expensive and only for the rich.’

Not at all! We understand that your decision to go ahead with high quality breast surgery shouldn’t be restricted by cost. That’s why we’ve made it easy to spread the cost of your treatment with our flexible payment options to suit you. Affordable finance is available for procedures costing 1,500 or more. You can pay a minimum deposit of 500 and choose either 12 monthly interest-free payments or spreading the cost over five years.

Myth 4: ‘Not all breast implants are safe.’

At The Hospital Group, we take the safety of our patients very seriously and only use breast implants from the world’s leading supplier offering Motiva, Mentor and Naterelle implants. Find out more about the breast implant options we offer.

Myth 5: ‘Breast surgery is a risky procedure.’

The Hospital Group is committed to providing very high standards and surgical excellence in breast surgery procedures. You can rest assured that we only work with highly experienced surgeons, so you get expert advice and care throughout your experience with us. With this level of care, you can have complete confidence that your treatment is performed by an expert medical team and in state-of-the-art facilities. Although breast enlargement is a very commonly performed surgery, it’s important to remember that any surgery carries some potential risks – in this case, these are bleeding, infection, and implant rippling. We’ll discuss all potential risks with you prior to surgery and answer any question you have.

Myth 6: ‘I will have scarring after a breast uplift.’

The scar for a standard breast uplift is usually placed around the nipple, from the nipple to the natural crease under the breast and then along the crease of the breast. Various methods may leave different scars. All scars take time to soften and fade. The scar is usually red and raised for the first month or two after your operation and you will not see the final appearance of your scar until up to a year after surgery.

Myth 7: ‘I will lose sensitivity in my breasts after a boob job.’

As with any breast procedure that involves incisions, there is a risk of loss of sensitivity when you undergo breast lift surgery, but this can vary from patient to patient. Breast uplift surgery involves the remodelling of the breast tissue and therefore you could experience a change in sensitivity to the nipple area as a result.

Myth 8: ‘Pregnancy will affect the results of my breast surgery.’

Pregnancy affects breasts with implants in the same way that it affects breasts without them. So if you gain a lot of weight during pregnancy, the skin of the breast can stretch, which can lead to sagging afterwards.

Myth 9: ‘I will have to spend time in hospital after my boob job.’

You may be able to return home the same day, but many of our patients require or prefer an overnight stay in one of our hospitals. We’ll discuss what we think is best with you before we book your surgery.

Myth 10: ‘My breast implants will need replacing every 10 years.’

Breast implants are not designed to last forever, but they don’t have a specific lifespan. Most surgeons say it’s wise to have your implants replaced between 10 to 20 years after the original procedure. Even if you’ve not experienced any problems with them, we recommend getting your implants checked over by a surgeon around 10 years after your surgery to make sure everything’s still okay.
