HOW MUCH IS GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY IN THE UK?
What is gastric bypass surgery?
Also known as Roux-en-Y surgery, gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss procedure that involves reducing the size of the stomach and connecting it to the lower section of the small intestine. This ‘bypasses’ the rest of the stomach and so restricts the amount of food that you can eat. This leads to a healthy, steady weight loss.
What does gastric bypass surgery involve?
For the procedure you will be given general anaesthetic, meaning that you’ll be asleep for the duration. Then your surgeon will begin by making 1 to 5 small incisions in your abdomen. They will then insert a laparoscope (a tiny camera) and inflate your abdomen. Surgical staples are then used to make a small pouch, about the size of a walnut, at the top of your stomach. Your surgeon will then make an incision in your small intestine and attach the lower part of it to your new pouch. The rest of your stomach and upper small intestine is then connected to the lower part in order to allow digestive fluids from the stomach to drain out. Your incisions are then closed to complete the surgery. The procedure in total can take between 1 to 3 hours.
Can I get gastric bypass surgery on the NHS?
Roux-en-Y surgery is available on the NHS, along with other forms of weight loss surgery, for those who meet certain criteria. To qualify for bariatric surgery on the NHS, you must:
-
Have a body mass index (BMI)of 40 or more, or a BMI between 35 and 40 and a serious condition that might improve if you lost weight (such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure)
-
Have tried all other weight loss methods, such as dieting and exercise, but have struggled to lose weight or keep it off
-
Agree to long-term follow-up after surgery – such as making healthy lifestyle changes and attending regular check-ups
-
Be fit and healthy enough to have surgery under general anaesthetic(where you're asleep)
-
Have been receiving or will receive treatment from a specialist obesity team.
Not everyone who has a BMI over 40 qualifies for weight loss surgery on the NHS, and those who do may be placed on a long waiting list.

What our patients say
Craig's transformation
“Having the surgery has changed my life – I wish it was something I’d done 20 years ago. My confidence has grown so much as a result, and I’m so much healthier too. Customers that I’ve had for many years still walk past without recognising me. It’s been such a life changer.
Managing my food is no big issue any more, because food is something I eat to survive. No longer am I surviving to eat.
I would definitely recommend weight loss surgery to anyone who is struggling with their weight. I feel better now than I did in my 20s and 30s!”
- Craig
Trustpilot review
“I had my gastric bypass 11 months ago, and I can honestly say it feels like my life has started again.
At my heaviest I was 26st 11lbs, and I’m now down to 17st 11lbs. I still have a long way to go, but I can now do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do before.
I get so many compliments now, and my confidence has returned. I still have a long road ahead of me, but it’s one that I’m looking forward to walking down. The smile on my face says it all – thank you The Hospital Group for giving me my life back!”
- Angela
