What is gastric sleeve surgery?

Also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, a gastric sleeve is a form of weight loss surgery. It involves removing a portion of your stomach. This creates the ‘sleeve,’ and means that you’ll be able to eat less food, but will absorb nutrients in the same way. The result is a steady and safe weight loss.

What does gastric sleeve surgery involve?

Before you have your procedure, you’ll be advised to go on a liver-shrinking diet in the weeks leading up to it. This means that your surgeon will be able to access your stomach without the liver getting in the way.

For the procedure, you will be given general anaesthetic, meaning that you’ll be asleep for the duration. To begin with, your surgeon will make 2 to 5 small incisions in your abdomen before inserting a laparoscope (tiny camera). They will then remove a portion of your stomach before joining together what remains to create a long, sleeve-shaped tube. This ‘sleeve’ is your new stomach.

The procedure will take around 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Can I get gastric sleeve surgery on the NHS?

Gastric sleeve surgery is available on the NHS for those who meet certain criteria. However, the waiting lists can be long and it’s not guaranteed that you’ll be referred for the surgery by your GP.

How much does gastric sleeve surgery cost in the UK?

The price of your gastric sleeve surgery will depend on a number of factors. These include your own BMI, the level of aftercare that you’ll receive, and whether you receive dietary support before and/or after your sleeve gastrectomy.
