Male cosmetic surgery: Through the years

Male cosmetic surgery is booming – here’s why…

A hundred years ago, male cosmetic surgery was seen as a way to help soldiers recover from war injuries.

These days, things have changed – and for the better! Today, male cosmetic surgery is seen as an accessible and popular way to bring confidence, self-belief and pleasure to tens of thousands of British men every year.

From the pioneering work of Harold Gillies, an ear, nose and throat surgeon who treated 2,000 soldiers during World War One, cosmetic surgery has come a long, long way.

In the 1950s and 1960s, when cosmetic surgery first started to become more widely available, it was originally targeted at women – and the movie stars of the day were the ones who presented the ‘ideal’ look.

Back in present day:

Today, people choose cosmetic surgery for a number of reasons, but one thing is for sure: its popularity is only increasing… And over the last five to 10 years, male cosmetic surgery has also become more and more popular. As well as choosing cosmetic surgery as a way to enhance their self-esteem and pride, some men need a post weight loss surgery nip and tuck following a significant weight loss…

If a man has been significantly overweight, for example, but worked hard to lose those extra pounds with gym sessions and a strict diet, they can be left with saggy, excess skin – which can cause other complications. The most accessible answer to correct this? Cosmetic surgery!

In an age where men are more determined to look good and feel great, it’s little wonder that the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) said the number of men having procedures rose 110% between 2000 and 2015 [1].

So, which cosmetic surgery procedures are most popular for men… and why?

Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)

Whether it’s the result of sporting injuries or simply a desire for different nose, many men are choosing to have a nose job.

Known as rhinoplasty, this common procedure can do everything from reducing or reshaping the nose’s bridge through to altering the size of the nostrils and the tip of the nose.

Liposuction

For men looking to shift ‘love handles’ around the stomach, liposuction is proving to be an increasingly popular procedure.

If you’ve put in the hours at the gym and you still can’t get the final result you’re hoping for, using liposuction to shape the abdominal area is a safe and proven way to reshape the areas of your body and help to boost your confidence.

Chest Reduction (Gynecomastia)

‘Moobs’ have long been the curse of middle-aged dads, but anyone from former body builders through to unfortunate teenagers can be struck by the condition that leaves extra fat around the pectoral muscles.

Liposuction (including Vaser Lipo), removing glandular tissue, or a combination of both, can be used to give men a firm, more defined chest – and the physique you’ve always dreamed of!

Eye Bag Removal (blepharoplasty)

Perfect for giving men an extra-youthful appearance, blepharoplasty also helps patients look more alert by tightening up drooping eyelids and removing bags under your eyes.

And the best news? The scars are so small, they can become barely visible over time.

Neck lift

As men age, they often acquire excess fat or hanging skin under the jaw and around the neck.

With a small incision behind the ear, an experienced surgeon can reduce these ‘jowls’ by tightening the patient’s muscles and removing any unwanted fat. So, the next time you put on a collar and tie, you could look sharper than ever.
