7 steps for gastric band success
As your dietitianwill have told you, a gastric band is a weight loss tool rather than a solution.
It requires the dedication to change your lifestyle to achieve the best results possible.
Bariatric surgery should not be thought of as a quick fix – you will need to be committed to adjusting your eating habits and working with your band to get the most out of it. Here are our top 7 steps in achieving long-term gastric band success:
1. Set realistic goals and stay positive!
Remember that lap bands are designed to help you lose weight gradually. Try not to compare yourself to other gastric band patients as results can vary from person to person – you are on your own unique journey. Feel motivated from progress, however slow it may feel, and take the time to celebrate small achievements – be proud of yourself, you are on your way!
2. Stock up on vitamins and minerals
Listen to your dietitian! It is essential that you take a lifelong daily multivitamin and mineral supplement after your gastric band surgery to help prevent any nutritional deficiencies. Your specialist dietitian will advise you on exactly what supplements you will need to take.
3. Follow the advice of your dietitian
A positive weight loss outcome from gastric band surgery is a result of working closely with your specialist bariatric nurses and dietitians. Following their advice and just being honest regarding concerns and deviations from your regime is the key to achieving the best results possible.
4. Get up and moving
Try your best to get active as soon as possible after surgery – this will help build up strength in your muscles as well as boosting your self-esteem in those important initial few weeks, especially if you are feeling demotivated and struggling with post-surgery blues. We recommend starting with a minimum of 15 minutes of physical activity per day which you can gradually increase as you begin to lose weight and exercising becomes a little easier.
5. Listen to your body
Sometimes, simply having the lap band in place but without being tightened is enough to provide sufficient benefit. It usually takes between 4 to 6 months to reach a level where you are comfortably and consistently losing weight. Our advice is to listen to your body carefully so you can recognise when you may need a band adjustment – but don’t worry too much as our bariatric nurses and dietitians will be able to advise you.
6. Be sure to attend your aftercare appointments
Having a gastric band fitted is a major surgery so it is really important to attend your follow up appointments so we can make sure everything is okay and you are healing as you should. Our specialist dietitians can also track your weight loss progress and offer advice, support and guidance to help you achieve your goals.
7. Make the most of the support that is available to you
Weight loss isn’t always easy, especially on your own. That is why you may have chosen gastric band surgery as a tool to help you achieve your healthy weight loss goals. Here at The Hospital Group, we understand actually having the surgery is only the start of your journey so don’t forget that we’re still here to support you.
After your gastric band, you will have access to our team of highly experienced dietitians, a dedicated weight loss support team who can help with booking appointments, emotional support, practical ideas and solutions as well as a dedicated 24-hour emergency telephone helpline.
