What is a facial peel?

Using a chemical solution, a facial peel exfoliates the skin, removing the top layer of dead skin cells and allowing new skin cells to be replenished. This means that a new layer of skin can be revealed which looks smoother, younger and fresher than before.

Facial peels are used to treat wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, sun damage and scars. They stimulate cell renewal through accelerated exfoliation which works deep into the layers of the skin to resurface it.

What are the benefits of a facial peel?

A facial peel has a number of benefits. The pigmentation caused by sun damage can be targeted, as can superficial scarring, and facial peels can also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. In addition, this treatment is effective in treating acne and congestion through removing build up on the skin, which then can help your home skincare products penetrate deeper when applied to the face

Chemical peels provide enhanced exfoliation which leads to healthy, glowing skin. Depending on your skin type, we may recommend a course of chemical peels so that you can achieve your optimal results.

Are there any risks?

It is important to weigh up the risks involved against the benefits that the treatment can bring – just as with all types of medical aesthetic treatment.

FAQ

Facial peel FAQs

More FAQs
Is a skin peel right for me?
There are many types of chemical skin peels, which can be customised to suit each person’s individual needs. An experienced practitioner will ensure that the peel they recommend for you is suitable for your skin colour, texture and needs.
Which skin peels do you offer?
Our UK clinics offer skin peels in a variety of strengths to suit differing requirements. Chemical peels are generally categorised as mild, medium and deep. Mild peels including the Obagi Blue Radiance Peel do not penetrate below the epidermis (top layer of the skin). Medium peels such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) reach the surface of the middle and thickest layer of the skin (the dermis) and deep peels including Phenol chemical peels reach the deeper levels of the dermis.
How long does treatment take?
The treatment takes around half an hour, but it may be longer depending on the product and treatment chosen. A chemical solution is applied to the area being treated and you will feel an initial warm sensation as the chemical becomes active. A post-peel cream is then applied. Two to three days later, your skin will begin to peel to reveal the healthy new skin beneath.
What other treatments can I consider?
Skin peels can be combined with many of our other treatments, both non-surgical and surgical, such as face lifts.
Is the treatment safe?
Our skin peel treatment is a superficial, controlled professional peel used by trained professionals. It is a deeper peel than you could achieve at home, as the chemicals used are more intensive.
Is it painful?
Peels are not painful, but you can expect a warm sensation during the acid solution’s action on the skin. The acid solution is removed after a set time and soothing creams and serums are applied.
Will I have any redness or peeling?
Depending on your skin type and the intensity of the peel, you may experience some redness, temporary dryness or superficial peeling/flaking. These symptoms are normal and they will diminish progressively and should disappear completely within 3 days. The use of the pre- and post-peel products will minimise the potential after effects.
Can I combine peeling with other treatments?
Yes, peeling can be done alone but will also work well in combination with other aesthetic treatments such as fillers or anti-wrinkle treatment. Your practitioner can recommend the best combination of treatments for your skin type and personal requirements.

Next steps

Your journey step by step

Your consultation

Your journey with The Hospital Group begins with a consultation with our friendly medical aesthetic practitioners, this may be an Aesthetician, Nurse Practitioner or Doctor. During this conversation you can talk through why you’re interested in this treatment, how much it costs, whether you’re suitable for treatment, if you’ll need a one off treatment, or a full course, as well as potential treatment dates.

You can ask our medical aesthetic practitioners any questions as they are extremely knowledgeable and have undertaken extensive training. If you feel ready to proceed, we can carry out a laser patch test (where applicable) and book your first treatment for a date and time that suits you.

The treatment

You can ask your medical aesthetic practitioner any final questions on the day of the treatment. All pre- and post-treatment advice will be discussed prior to the day itself, so you will know exactly what to expect during your treatment, including how long it will take, and how it will feel.

Recovery

For most medical aesthetic treatments, you will be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed, and you should be able to go about your normal day-to-day activities. If you experience any mild discomfort, redness or swelling, this will subside within the following days. Any specific aftercare requirements will be discussed at your consultation.

Aftercare

We are here to support you throughout your medical aesthetics journey, we believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact us at any time.
