We understand that weight loss isn’t easy, but it’s important to realise that you’re not alone in your journey.
Research conducted by The Hospital Group via public opinion data company YouGov found that 56% of UK adults feel they are overweight – and 1 in 5 of these people agree that they’ve given up hope of ever losing weight. Read our full report.
The research found that the most common reason for this was that they struggled to keep their weight loss long-term. Indeed, over half of respondents said that each time they lost weight, they put it on again.
That’s why we’re committed to providing our patients with the complete range of tools, support and professional advice they need to make sure they reach and maintain their weight loss goals, whatever they might be.
It’s true to say that every weight loss journey is different. Each person has a unique story to tell. We sat down with three of our patients to have an honest and unfiltered conversation with them regarding their weight loss journey – the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
All three had weight loss surgery with us at The Hospital Group. They spoke in depth about their motivation for considering weight loss surgery, why they decided to go ahead, the procedure itself, and their results.
After years of concerns about her weight, and after toying with the idea of weight loss surgery for a long while, Helen chose to take the leap. In September 2013, her weight loss journey began at our Dolan Park Hospital in Birmingham, where she underwent gastric sleeve surgery. In her own words, she tells us:
“My journey started 14 years ago when I was just 36. I had two medical procedures within 6 months and my weight ballooned. Over the next 4 years, I continually tried every fat burning diet on the market, but I was really struggling to lose weight.”
Following the procedure, our team of dietitians worked collaboratively with Helen on an individual weight loss diet plan. She was astounded to find that in only 4 months, she’d lost 30% of her overall weight loss target. Helen talks in depth about her weight loss journey, documenting her experience
Our next patient, Craig, made the decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery because of increasing health concerns and is now able to maintain a healthy body mass index [BMI]. He says:
“I had the gastric bypass simply for health reasons. One day, I sat with my GP and he looked me straight in the eye and said I had 5 years left to live. I was losing my vision, I had diabetes, my legs were numb. I tried Slimming World, Slimfast, everything, but I lost and put on weight, plus! So having the gastric bypass was the best thing I ever did. Now I have no diabetes, no blood pressure tablets, it’s all gone!”
After having his gastric bypass procedure, Craig lost 9 stone and the improvements to his health have been dramatic. He gives and receives support from other weight loss surgery patients at The Hospital Group, who keep up to date on one another’s weight loss journey. If, like Craig, you want to improve your health through weight loss, then get in touch with The Hospital Group to find out the options available for you.
Demi had been struggling with her self-esteem after gaining weight, and had a gastric band fitted at The Hospital Group in March 2018.
“The reason I had the gastric band was due to self confidence and self-esteem. I couldn’t control my food portions and I just found myself getting bigger and bigger. I tried personal trainers, Slimming World, Weight Watchers, and I found that they helped, but when I was at home, I was still comfort eating. [The gastric band] was that little push I needed and it’s the best thing I have ever done.”
The gastric band has allowed Demi to take control of her food portion sizes, and she’s lost around 4 stone over the past two years. Demi’s weight loss procedure has completely changed her relationship with both herself and her children. She’s so much more confident as a result of embarking on her weight loss journey.
