Your options

NHS, private or abroad?

Weight loss surgery on the NHS or private

Weight loss surgery is available on the NHS, but availability varies across the UK. According to NHS guidance, you may be able to have weight loss surgery on the NHS if:

  • your BMI is 40 or more, or
  • your BMI is between 35 and 40 and you have a condition that might improve if you lost weight, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes
  • you agree to make healthy lifestyle changes and attend regular reviews after surgery

A lower BMI threshold may apply if you have a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African Caribbean family background.

If you'd prefer to go private, your first step is a free consultation with us to find out which treatment is right for you.

Having surgery in the UK or abroad

Wherever you have it, weight loss surgery needs long term follow up. When you have surgery with The Hospital Group:

  • your surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council
  • your operation takes place in a hospital registered with the Care Quality Commission
  • your follow up appointments are here in the UK, through our nationwide network of clinics
  • you can call our 24/7 helpline once you're home

If you're thinking about surgery abroad, read the independent advice from the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and the National Travel Health Network and Centre before you decide.

How much does weight loss surgery cost in the UK?

It depends on the procedure and your treatment plan. Our prices cover everything from the procedure itself, right through the post-op appointments and your aftercare. Use our Procedure Price Check to find out what your surgery could cost.

It depends on your BMI, your health and your goals. A gastric sleeve removes part of your stomach, a gastric bypass makes your stomach smaller and joins it to your small intestine, and a gastric band is an adjustable band placed around the upper stomach. At your free consultation, we’ll talk you through each option and help you decide.

As a guide, a gastric band may be considered with a BMI of 30 or above. A gastric sleeve is recommended for men with a BMI of 35 to 50 and women with a BMI of 35 to 55. A gastric bypass could be suitable with a BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more with an obesity related condition such as type 2 diabetes. We’ll confirm whether you’re suitable at your free consultation.

Weight loss surgery is available on the NHS, but availability varies across the UK. NHS guidance says you may be eligible if your BMI is 40 or more, or between 35 and 40 with a condition that might improve if you lost weight, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. A lower BMI threshold may apply for some ethnic backgrounds. You can also choose to go private, starting with a free consultation with us.

Yes. You can spread the cost of your surgery in monthly instalments with finance from humm, subject to status. Our patient advisors can talk you through the options.

Most people take between 5 days and 10 days off work, depending on the procedure. Full recovery usually takes from 6 to 8 weeks, and you can normally start exercising again after 6 weeks. Your surgeon will give you a recovery plan that’s specific to you.

As a guide, patients can expect to lose around 20% of their total body weight after a gastric band, 25 to 30% after a gastric sleeve and 30 to 35% after a gastric bypass. Individual results vary, and the changes you make to your diet and lifestyle after surgery make a big difference.

It’s your decision, but it’s important to think about your aftercare. Weight loss surgery needs long term follow up, and when you have surgery with The Hospital Group your follow up appointments are here in the UK. The British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society publishes independent advice for anyone considering weight loss surgery abroad.
