As we age or lose weight, we might find that the area on the upper arm starts to develop excess skin – sometimes referred to as “bingo wings”. This can affect not just our body confidence, but also the clothes we choose to wear – perhaps wanting to hide away the tops of the arms with longer sleeves. An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure, aimed at creating a more contoured shape.
Arm lift surgery achieves this by smoothing and tightening tissue, reducing extra skin, and removing extra fat. Upper arms should look more toned and defined following the procedure.
The upper arm can start to become loose and sag as the skin changes through aging. Significant weight loss can also have the same effect. Of course, the upper arms can be strengthened and the muscle tone improved through exercise, but the excess skin that has lost its elasticity cannot be fixed.
Arm lift surgery is used to remove excess fat and skin from the area. If required, liposuction can also be utilised. It is a relatively straightforward general surgery, and whilst you may be required to stay in overnight following it, most patients go home after just one night’s recovery.
All surgical procedures pose a potential risk, and it is important know what these are before you go ahead so that you can weigh them up against the benefits your procedure could bring. During your consultations you will talk through these potential complications and you can ask any questions that you have about them.
As a guide, risks may include pain, bleeding, infections, blood clots, scars, numbness and asymmetry of the upper arms.
If you are looking to bring a better shape to the upper arms and are close to your ideal weight, then this would be best suited to you. This procedure should not be seen as weight loss surgery.
To allow a good outcome, the ideal candidate would have enough elasticity and loose skin.
